Protect Your Business from Email Compromise

Business Email Compromise (BEC) is the latest scam targeting businesses in the US. Criminals take advantage of the fact that so many of us rely on email to conduct business. In a BEC scam, fraudsters send an email that looks like it comes from a legitimate company and tries to trick the victim into wiring or mailing money to a fraudulent account or address.

Here are some ways you can protect your business:

  • Be on your guard if a requestor pressures you to act quickly.
  • Carefully examine the email address a request is sent from. Look for very minor differences.
  • Never click on anything in an unsolicited text or email asking you to update or verify account information.
  • Verify payment requests by phone. Call the company’s phone number that you have in your own records or look the number up yourself. Never trust the number provided in an email.
