Mailbox Fishing & Check Washing
Mailbox fishing is when fraudsters steal envelopes out of mailboxes looking for checks, cash, and gift cards. If they find checks, they’ll use chemicals to remove all writing from a check except the signature (this is called check washing). The criminals will then re-write the check for any amount and cash it under a different name.
Since we first began alerting you about this type of fraud, the scheme has evolved. While the post office has upgraded mailboxes with anti-theft mail slots, criminals began stealing mailbox keys to continue taking mail. Fortunately, there are actions you can take to avoid becoming a victim of this type of fraud.
- Pay your bills online or sign up for autopay.
- If you must mail a check, drop it off inside the post office.
- If you must use a mailbox, drop off right before the last pick up of the day.
- Don't let mail pile up in your home mailbox.
- Use a gel or felt tip pen to write your checks instead of ball point.
- Regularly review your bank accounts for irregularities.
